CIAO Collaborative Research Workshop - 26-27 May 2010Our School was proud to host this Workshop on 26-27 May 2010, which focused on "Challenges and Methodologies in Complex Systems Optimization and Control". The Workshop host was Professor David Gao, who organised an impressive line up of speakers:
Program details can be found at: http://guerin.ballarat.edu.au/ard/itms/CIAO/Workshops/Program_for_26-27_May_2010_Workshop.pdf Appointment of Honorary ProfessorsWe are very pleased to announce the appointment of five new Honorary Professors to the University of Ballarat, who will work closely with the Graduate School of ITMS and the Centre for Informatics & Applied Optimization (CIAO): Professor Shu-Cherng Fang Professor Fang is Walter Clark Chair and University Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor at Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, in the United States. His research is in large scale linear and nonlinear optimization, telecommunications network design and planning, computer-aided manufacturing systems, information theoretic analysis, fuzzy systems and decision making, intelligent human-machine decision support systems, factory data networking, and global information infrastructure, which relate very well to the research undertaken within CIAO, the Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization located within this School. Professor Fang is known to many research staff within GSITMS and has been working with a number of staff on research projects. He is current editor-in-chief of the Springer Journal of Fuzzy Optimization, and he has extensive connections with universities around the world, especially in Asia. Professor Guanrong (Ron) Chen Professor Chen is Chair Professor and Director of the Centre for Chaos and Complex Networks at the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. His research interests are Chaotic Systems, Computational Science and Complex Networks. Professor Chen is a leading world scientist in the multi-disciplinary fields of complex systems, computational science, applied mathematics and chaotic dynamics. He is currently editor-in-chief of several well-known journals including International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, and IEEE Circuits and Systems Magazine. Professor Chen also holds adjunct and honorary positions from a number of Chinese universities. Professor Ray Ogden Professor Ogden is George Sinclair Professor of Mathematics at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in the United Kingdom. His research fields are Applied Mathematics, Continuum Mechanics, Biomechanics, and Material Science. Professor Ogden is well known internationally as an applied mathematician in the field of continuum mechanics and engineering mathematics. He was Editor-in-Chief of the IMA Journal of Applied Mathematics (1988-1998), and currently co-Editor-in-Chief of the Springer Book Series of Advances in Mechanics and Mathematics. Professor Ogden also serves as associate editor for more than ten international journals. Professor Panos Pardalos Professor Pardalos is University Distinguished Professor and Director of the Center for Applied Optimization at the University of Florida, in the United States. He has received numerous awards including University of Florida Research Foundation Professor, UF Doctoral Dissertation Advisor/Mentoring Award, Foreign Member of the Royal Academy of Doctors (Spain), Foreign Member Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of the Petrovskaya Academy of Sciences and Arts (Russia), and Honorary Member of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. His primary research fields of Global Optimization and Computer Science. Professor Pardalos is a Founding President of the newly launched International Society of Global Optimization (iSoGO). Professor Tudor Ratiu Professor Ratiu is Director of the Bernoulli Center and Chair Professor of Geometric Analysis at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne), in Lausanne, Switzerland. His research is in geometric mechanics – both classical and continuum – and global analysis. Professor Ratiu is a leading international mathematician in the fields of global analysis, dynamical systems, and nonlinear optimal control. He is currently working with a CIAO staff member on nonconvex dynamical systems, and together they are planning to organise a series of international symposia, which will be scheduled over the next few years. |
