UB Tec's new building under construction, Tuesday September 28 2010UB Tec celebrates the official commencement of work on the new UB Tec building to be constructed on the corner of Moyle and Grant Streets at the SMB Campus. The new and exciting Technical Education Centre will cater for fifteen to nineteen-year-olds who haven't completed year twelve. "That will give our children the opportunity to move into the trades and other technical education opportunities," Minister for Skills Bronwyn Pike said. "It's a thirty six million dollar initiative by the government because we want to make sure that kids do in fact complete high school," Ms Pike said. "It's the first centre of its type in this part of Victoria, the state government has now provided funding for four technical education centres but this one will be very special," University of Ballarat Vice-Chancellor Professor David Battersby said. What makes the Ballarat facility so unique is that it will be co-located with a university, making it the first of its kind in the state. "So there will be an opportunity for 15 year olds to study at the University of Ballarat and if they so choose to complete their education with a Masters degree or a doctorate at the University of Ballarat," Professor Battersby said. The new purpose built facility is expected to open in 2012. "We already have in place at the moment the Technical Education Centre which is running out of temporary premises and we have I think in excess of 120 students already gearing up to move into the new centre."
