- Why attend UB Tec?
Because the facilities provide a unique hands-on learning centre in an adult learning environment located in the centre of Ballarat at the SMB Campus, University of Ballarat and provides access to existing TAFE specialised training facilities.
- Why do VCAL instead of VCE?
If you choose to do the VCAL instead of the VCE, students gain practical experience and 'employability' skills, as well as the skills needed to go onto further training in the workplace or at a TAFE.
- How long is the course?
The course is for one year full-time for each certificate level - Intermediate and Senior level. Part-time enrolments are also considered.
- What employment opportunities will
there be?
The course at UB Tec develops general skills which increase your eligibility for trade training and employability. Graduates can go on to apprenticeships or pre-apprenticeships in any of the industry specific courses. > Industry Specific Courses
- What costs and other fees are
involved?
Contact UB Tec for current fees for a full-time student. There are also a Student Services & Amenities Fee and a Materials Fee applicable to each course undertaken.
- Are there any Scholarships or
Sponsorships available?
Yes. As a student enroled at the University of Ballarat UB Tec students may be eligible to apply for several scholarships and in the future, sponsorship. > TAFE Portfolio Scholarships
- What qualifications will be
received?
A Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning at the Intermediate and/or Senior level. The certificate is made up of accredited modules and units from the four VCAL strands and is issued from the VCAA who also issues the VCE certificates. > VCAA/VCAL
- What skills will students have when the
course is completed?
A range of skills would be learnt which would increase employability - literacy and numeracy skills, hand-on skills for various trades - problem solving, organisational and planning skills, general knowledge and interpersonal skills.
- Does the student at UB Tec have to sit
the GAT (General Assessment Test)?
Students, whose only enrolment consists of VCAL units, are not required to sit the GAT. However, students can choose to sit the GAT if it is appropriate to their pathway into further education, training or employment.
